HLH was founded as non-profit in 1986 by a group of Native Hawaiian physicians and concerned citizens. In 1991 the organization gained a professional status under the Native Hawaiian Health Care Improvement Act. The organization is trying to improve the health status of Native Hawaiians, which have the highest rates for diabetes, obesity, cardio-vascular disease, and poor dental health. At the basic core of these problems is proper diet, nutrition, and lack of exercise. In 2001 the organization expanded and became the first Federally Qualified Health Center for the county of Kaua`i serving all people living on the island.The overall mission of the Kaua`i Community Health Center Dental health Services is a cooperative effort to respond to the challenge of delivering and assuring comprehensive, state-of-the-art, and personalized dental health services of the highest quality and safety to Native Hawaiians and to all the underserved people of Kaua`i.
